For the past couple of years I have always wanted to start a blog but have had no idea what I wanted to write about. That’s kinda an important thing to figure out before you take on a big project like this. I had wanted to start a blog for a couple of reasons:
- To practice my writing
- To write on a topic that might help someone else when they read it
- To prepare myself for the possibility of writing a book in the future
- To learn more about the world of blogging and the parts of social networking that I have yet to explore.
So, at the end of 2015 I decided to take the plunge. I reached out to a long time friend Katy Widrick and ask if she would help me get started on my journey into the blogging world. Katy has been awesome! I quickly realized how little I knew about blogging and how passionate I was about trying to figure it all out quickly. Katy was great at slowing me down and taking baby steps with me.
What am I writing about?
I am a 36-year-old single woman who has never been married and has no children of my own. Most woman this age would assume that by this time those things would have happened, myself included. I am at a crossroads in my life right now and trying to figure out which way to go next. The past couple of years I have learned a lot about myself. I think when you are in your thirties, and you are still living on your own with no family of your own, you start to see life a little differently. It may not be what you planned but if you embrace it you start to see the world differently and realize you are not alone. I’m writing about how I am Thriving in my Thirties through my relationships with friends, family, guys and my career.
Some people may say blogging is therapeutic, and it might be, but my purpose is to write something that will be able to hopefully help others who are in the same position as me. Whether it be one person or 1,000 people I hope to connect with others who are in the same situation as I am. From the research I have done since starting this blog, it is becoming more common for people to be in the same situation I am in. People’s priorities are changing.
It’s amazing how putting your thoughts in words can completely change how someone perceives you. I have had friends tell me how my posts have really hit home with them. I have had my mother tell me that she has learned so much about me since reading my posts. Who knew what a few words on a computer could do.
Blogging about yourself and putting yourself out there can be VERY intimidating as I’m sure most people can agree with. I have been blogging since the end of 2015 but haven’t really shared it with the world yet. When I first decided to blog I thought I was just going to keep myself somewhat anonymous (hence my profile picture in the about me section). As time has gone on I have begun to let my guard down a little more (and to be honest it’s a lot easier to promote your blog to the 800+ people I already have on my personal Facebook as opposed to complete strangers – shameless marketing, I know).
I know I will be judged, critiqued and looked at differently when people read my Blog. I think, however, as you get older you just learn to accept that people will always have different opinions. I have shared this blog already with some people close to me and people who I think may be surprised by what I have written. I in no way intend to use my writing to hurt or offend anyone and made sure everyone knew that. I have gotten an overwhelming amount of support and encouragement from those who have already been following my writing and I truly hope it can go somewhere and help others.
Interested in starting a blog but have no idea where to start?
When I decided to start blogging I was overwhelmed with the amount of information that was out there. I had know idea where to start and I wanted to make sure I did everything the right way. The one thing I can say about the blogging community is everyone wants to help everyone, and everybody wants to see others succeed.
If you are interested in starting a blog and are just as confused as I was, I HIGHLY recommend checking out my friend Katy Widrick’s blog. She has so many useful tools on her website about blogging and social media that you will be on her site for hours! She also does consulting on the side when she is not working at her full-time job and taking care of her 2 BEAUTIFUL little girls. If you are into fitness she has a section for that too! She is easy to work with no matter what part of the world you live in and will go at your own pace.
I have to give much credit to Katy for giving me the confidence and push to help me start this blog and I hope it only gets better from here.
